Tūhawaiki was a rangatira of Ngāi Tahu from Ruapuke Island. He was a warrior, a businessman and a politician. It was Tūhawaiki who led the fight back against Te Rauparaha and Ngāti Toa after they attacked Ngāi Tahu, leaving thousands killed, injured or displaced. Outnumbered and outgunned, the courage and creativity of Tūhawaiki forged a way forward. When Major Bunbury arrived at Ruapuke seeking his signature on the Treaty of Waitangi, Tūhawaiki signed, then turned the tables with demands of his own.

Tokitoki was a Ngāi Tahu wahine from a long line of rangatira. Fearless and self-assured, she walked confidently between two worlds. When her uncle captured a young Pākehā sealer named James Caddell, Tokitoki's intervention may have changed the course of his life, and her own. Years later, when Sydney traders arrived at Ruapuke hoping to establish a southern flax trade, she stole the show. Tokitoki's journey to Australia made the papers, and she wasn't done there. She returned to Australia, negotiating the terms and weaving her story into Ngāi Tahu history with each step.
